Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge is the high-octane sequel to Aditya Dhar’s 2025 spy thriller Dhurandhar. Directed, written, and co-produced by Dhar himself, the film hits theaters worldwide on 19 March 2026 in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam. It stars Ranveer Singh as Hamza (aka Jaskirat Singh Rangi), now embedded in Karachi’s underworld. Ranveer anchors the film with a powerhouse performance, ably supported by Arjun Rampal (as Major Iqbal, the new villain), R. Madhavan, Sanjay Dutt, Rakesh Bedi, and Sara Arjun. The film’s massive budget and publicity pushed huge box-office expectations even before release.

Plot & Characters

Dhurandhar 2 expands the first film’s spy saga. It begins with Hamza’s origin: Jaskirat Singh, a young soldier-in-training, suffers a family tragedy that sends him on a path of revenge. We see Hamza as an avenging angel – a “rage machine… a pulverising powder keg” on a mission. The sequel picks up Hamza’s story in Pakistan, where Arjun Rampal’s Major Iqbal (a brutal ISI officer) emerges as his nemesis. Ranveer’s character navigates a complex web of criminals and politicians: Rakesh Bedi returns as the duplicitous politician Jameel Jamali, and R. Madhavan plays Ajay Sanyal (a security chief modeled on a government advisor). Sanjay Dutt is the tough police officer Chaudhary, while child actress Sara Arjun appears in a key role. The script even weaves in real events – references to 2016’s demonetisation and nostalgic Hindi film songs add dramatic context to the action.

Production & Promotion

Aditya Dhar pulled out all stops to make Dhurandhar 2 bigger and more authentic. Shooting included elaborate stunts (one Ranveer-led underwater sequence went viral pre-release) and exotic locations. Dhar even cast background actors from Karachi’s Lyari (the real neighborhood) to film the crowd scenes, adding gritty realism. In interviews and social media, Dhar thanked first-film audiences and said the sequel was designed “to surprise you… to make you feel emotions you weren’t prepared for”. The marketing campaign was intense: in February 2026, Dhar, Ranveer and the studio cryptically teased a “big update” via social posts, which turned out to be the trailer (released March 7). The coordinated rollout – from teaser posters to Ranveer’s Instagram announcements – built fan excitement leading up to the March release.

Box Office Results

Dhurandhar 2 broke records immediately upon release. Paid previews and advance bookings set new highs, and opening day collections in India were enormous. By the end of its first week it had collected over ₹623 crore net domestically (about ₹734 crore gross). Industry trackers noted the film “has simply torn up the record books…smashing practically every single record” in its debut week. Within 6 days the movie had already earned ~₹575 crore net in India and ₹919 crore worldwide, surpassing the lifetime gross of 2023’s hit Animal in almost no time.

Overseas, Dhurandhar 2 enjoyed an unprecedented run. It grossed roughly ₹263 crore (≈$28 million) in its first six days outside India, becoming the second-highest overseas grosser ever for a Hindi film (overtaking Animal). Trade reports even put it as the #2 worldwide film on its opening weekend (after a Hollywood sci-fi) with a $46.6M global weekend haul. By late March it was closing in on lifetime benchmarks – analysts predicted it could even challenge Pushpa 2’s ₹1,742 crore record. In short, Dhurandhar 2’s box-office run has been nothing short of historic.

Reception

Audience Response: Fans have largely embraced the film. Social media buzz was immediate: early viewers called it a “cinematic blast” and said Ranveer Singh was “brutal” in his role. Netizens praised the movie’s grounded, realistic tone, noting that many scenes felt ripped from real news events. The film’s violent second half, filled with twists and high-octane drama, kept audiences on the edge of their seats. Ranveer’s performance received especially high praise – viewers said he “completely immerses himself” in the character and elevates even the most intense scenes. Co-stars like Sara Arjun, Madhavan, Rampal and Bedi were also lauded for fleshing out their roles.

Critical Reviews: Critics in India gave mixed-to-positive reviews. Some praised the film’s scale and lead performance: Firstpost wrote that despite its nearly four-hour length, “Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge” is “engaging, immersive, and ferociously intense”, and called Ranveer’s act a “powerhouse” performance. Actress Ameesha Patel even called the movie an “eye opener” and applauded Dhar for focusing on real storytelling over gimmicks. However, others pointed out flaws. International commentators labeled it “toxic” and overly graphic – Indian Express reported critics saying the film’s relentless brutality and jingoistic tone made it “hard to fathom why audiences are flocking to see all this horror”. Within India, reviewers noted the sequel felt “angrier, louder, emptier” than the first. In particular, many critics missed the first film’s strong antagonist (Akshaye Khanna’s character was killed off), saying the new villains aren’t as compelling. Overall, the consensus is that Dhurandhar 2 delivers big thrills (and box-office returns) even if its political messaging divides opinion.

Streaming & Download Options

After its theater run, Dhurandhar: The Revenge will move to streaming. Unlike the first Dhurandhar (which went to Netflix), the sequel’s digital rights were sold to Jio’s platform. In fact, the opening credits already show JioHotstar (now JioCinema) branding, confirming it will stream there. No official OTT premiere date has been announced yet, but analysts expect the film to debut online about 6–8 weeks after March 19 – roughly in May or June 2026. When it appears on JioCinema, subscribers will be able to watch it on demand. Importantly, the official app even allows offline downloading: as NewsBytes explains, JioCinema lets paid users download titles to their devices for offline viewing.
